The Royal Engagement Alderney coin, celebrating the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton, went on sale Monday, Breaking Celebrity News has learned.

The coin is worth about $7.75; it’s the first ever to celebrate an engagement, and bears the image of the young English lovers. Fifty-thousand are being sold via the Royal Mint at their website royalmint.com.

"We are delighted to showcase this new coin," the Royal Mint told US. "The special betrothal design has been approved by Prince William and Her Majesty The Queen."

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been an item for almost a decade, as they met as students at Scotland's St. Andrew's University back in 2001.

As Breaking Celebrity News previously reported, the couple is slated to get married April 29, 2011 at the historic English church, Westminster Abbey.
