Did life imitate art or was it the other way around?  For months -- at the same time she was planning her split from Tom Cruise -- Katie Holmes was quietly co-writing and in prepping for production a film about a single mom and her daughter.

It's called Molly, and Katie will also be starring in the project, People magazine is reporting.

The movie will shoot in New York City for the next month, wrapping just in time for Katie to start on Responsible Adults with Chace Crawford.

Then Katie will be making her first-ever appearance at new York's Fashion Week, going out front to promote her Holmes & Yang line for the first time since it launched in 2009.
