Artie Lange is expected back in court on Friday following his March arrest for possession of heroin, and while the troubled star says he's now two months sober, insiders tell Breaking Celebrity News exclusively that it's all for show.
"Artie is sober because he has no choice," one insider revealed. "He has to be sober for the judge. And if the judge rules in his favor there's no telling what Artie can do — if he will go back to using or not."
Another insider told Breaking Celebrity News, Lange, 50, was "looking at five years jail time."
"He's going to do time for sure," the insider said. "Community service is out of the question. His friends are hoping for a 24 month sentence and Artie getting out after 10 on good behavior."
Lange struggled with drug addiction for most of his life. On Sunday, he made an emotional plea on the show Crashing — revealing raw emotions on why it's been difficult for him to quit drugs.
"It's a physical thing, its not just an emotional thing," Lange said. "It's physical getting off heroin."
"Honestly, I wish I could go back when a younger Artie did heroin for the first time in a f**king hotel room on the road," Lange admitted. "I wish I can tackle that guy. I literally wish I could attack him and stop him from doing it. But it's over, it's just over."
On top of Lange's drug addiction struggles, the comedian also suffers from depression. In 2010, the same year he was diagnosed with diabetes, Lange attempted suicide for the second time by drinking bleach and slitting his wrists.
The troubled comic has been in and out of rehab since leaving the Essex Couny Jail in New Jersey back in December. Lange was arrested for failure to appear in court for his previous drug possession charge.
"I think Artie has made it plain to see that he is someone who struggles with this disease for many years," the insider added. "The chances of him never using again are obviously against him. But, he does have a lot to live for with the podcast, with his HBO show Crashing, with his standup routine."
